Description
Kitten & Mother Vintage American Bar Brooch | Jonette Jewelry | 1980s
The charming and sentimental bar-style brooch is a lovely example of the figurative work that the Jonette Jewelry Company could produce. Both kitten and mother have been wonderfully captured in good detail as they share a meal; the kitten eager and sturdy, tail up, and the cat relaxed yet vigilant, her powerful feline form at rest finely depicted. The brooch is cast in pewter, marked to the rear with the familiar ‘JJ’ monogram, and is secured with a roll-over clasp with extra-long pin.
The Jonette Jewelry Company is a name well known to collectors of American costume jewellery. Most famous for its range of whimsical pins and brooches, this family-owned business was founded in Rhode Island in the mid-1940s but has its origins in the 1930s firms Providence Jewelry and Lisker & Lisker, which shut down due to wartime shortages of materials. Jonette Jewelry Co. closed in 2006 after 60 years of production, and its designs are now much sought after by vintage collectors.
