Cheshire Cat Vintage American Brooch | Jonette Jewelry | 1980s
The 1980s were a strange and wonderful time indeed, and this is one of Jonette Jewelry’s most gloriously surreal cat castings from the period. This unusual brooch takes the form of a plump Cheshire cat, sitting on a wildly crooked chair and grinning broadly. It is cast in pewter, marked to the rear with the familiar ‘JJ’ monogram, and is secured with a roll-over clasp.
The Jonette Jewelry Company is a name well known to collectors of American costume jewellery. Most famous for its range of whimsical pins and brooches, this family-owned business was founded in Rhode Island in the mid-1940s but has its origins in the 1930s firms Providence Jewelry and Lisker & Lisker, which shut down due to wartime shortages of materials. Jonette Jewelry Co. closed in 2006 after 60 years of production, and its designs are now much sought after by vintage collectors.
At Thrilled Kitty we offer a selection from their mid-1980s range of humorous cat brooches and lapel pins, cast mostly in polished pewter and brass. Often making use of articulated features, JJ pieces are a great way to add a touch of fun to an outfit. And, as with all of our antique and vintage jewellery pieces, they are gift boxed and ready to give as a fantastic present. You’ll find more great examples if you explore our full selection of Jonette Jewelry brooches and pins.
