Kuching City, capital of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. The source of the city’s name is lost in the mists of time but its similarity to the Malay word kucing, meaning cat, has earned it the nickname Cat City, and the people of Kuching have certainly taken the moniker to heart!
Statues of cats are scattered throughout the city, such as the family group near Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, and the huge white cat in front of Little China Town, which has a whole wardrobe of outfits and decorations to celebrate different festivals and holidays throughout the year. There is even a dedicated museum stocked with some 4000 exhibits.
Local craftspeople produce an eclectic assortment of hand-worked feline wonders, and one of these, a beautiful and practical door wedge carved from Sarawakian hardwood, has found its way to our Modern Craft department. You can see it here, and we hope to bring you more treasures from Cat City in the future.
